Sheila Johnson, the the entrepreneur and philanthropist, will receive an award from the Annie Oakley Society of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.
The annual awards luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, at the Sam Noble’s Special Events Center at the museum, 1700 NE 63rd St.
The Sept. 30 award recipient is co-founder of Black Entertainment Television, and founder and chief executive officer of Salamander Hotels & Resorts.
Also, she is the only Black woman to have ownership in three professional sports teams: the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League, the Washington Wizards of the National Basketball Association and the Washington Mystics of the Women’s National Basketball Association.
(She is president and managing partner of the latter team.)
The BET co-founder will be honored for her contributions as a pioneer in the entertainment and hospitality industries, and for her humanitarian efforts.
A supporter of education and the arts, Mrs. Johnson is a member of the board of governors of the Jackie Robinson Foundation.
In 2016, she co-founded WE Capital, a venture capital consortium to empower female-led enterprises that can advance social change.
She serves on the board of directors of the Greater Washington Partnership, which seeks to strengthen the region’s global position as a center for commerce and innovation
